Weight vs Volume: Measuring Fragrance

weight vs volume measuring fragrance oil

You may have noticed that the bottle you ordered is not filled to capacity. Or, when comparing two different bottles from one company it seems like there’s less oil in some than others! It might have you wondering if some of the oil leaked out or maybe you didn’t get exactly what you paid for. There can be some confusion between weight versus volume measurements for fragrance oil – but don’t worry! We’ll take you through the differences between weight and volume and which one is best for measuring fragrance oils. We’ll also give you a tip on how to make sure your candles turn out perfectly every time!

Volume vs. Weight Measurement

When it comes to measuring your fragrance oil, accuracy is key in ensuring a safe and quality candle. This can be tricky because weight and volume are not the same measurement. It is important to understand the difference between weight and volume.

Volume and weight are both ways of measuring how much something is. Volume is a measure of the amount of space an object occupies, while weight is a measure of the amount of matter in an object or simply put, how heavy it is.

The difference in density can cause issues when measuring fragrance oils by volume. Without this knowledge, you may be adding an inconsistant and disproportionate amount of fragrance. A miscalculation like this can introduce problems that will affect the end result of your candle.

Being that fragrance oils are liquids, it might be tempting to measure them in volume but volume is not a precise measurement. When you are measuring fragrance oils, you are really measuring the weight of the oil. This means that you are getting the same amount of oil no matter what the volume of the bottle may be. Some oils are more dense than others, meaning they will take up less room in the bottle, but you are still getting the same weight. Oils that are less dense will take up more room in the bottle, but again you are still getting the same weight.

If you add too little fragrance oil to wax, your candles will not smell as strong as they should.  Additionally, adding too much fragrance oil to wax, affects the overall performance of the candle. The wicks can clog, the excess fragrance may seep out the wax, which looks like sweating.

Here are some visual comparisons to help illustrate this concept:

Both of these beakers are holding 2 ounces of the fragrance oil. The one on the right is denser than the one on the left.

Why measure in grams/What unit of measurement should I use?

It’s beneficial that you use a unit of measurement that is precise when measuring your ingredients. While it’s perfectly fine to measure fragrance in ounces, they are not always precise enough, but grams are. This is because most scales that measure in ounces can only show ounces to the quarter or eighth of an ounce, whereas scales that measure in grams can show grams to the tenth or even hundredth of a gram.

While measuring your fragrance oil in grams will be more precise it all comes down to personal preference. You may feel more comfortable measuring in ounces. It’s really up to you! Just remember that the key is to be consistent with your measurements so that your candles making process is consistent.

How Much Fragrance Oil Should I Use?

Now that you know the importance of measuring fragrance oil accurately, you might be wondering how much fragrance oil you should use in your candles. The answer to this question really depends on the type of wax you are using and the strength of fragrance you want your candles to have. Refer to the manufacturers guidelines.

Measuring Fragrance Oil for Candle Making

When measuring fragrance oil for candle making, it is important to use a scale that can measure small amounts accurately. Digital scales that measure in grams or ounces are perfect for this purpose.

To measure fragrance oil, first select your fragrance and determine what percentage of fragrance oil you want to use. As we mentioned before, the fragrance load will vary depending on the type of wax.

Once you have determined the percentage of fragrance oil you want to use, calculate the amount of fragrance oil and wax needed.

Weigh out the desired amount using your scale. Be sure to write down the weight of the fragrance oil so that you can use it again in the future.
